The dawnhounds6/12/2023 ![]() It’s always hard for me to decide if I actually like a book when I have no idea what really happened half the time. Everything else that happened in-between, I’m not as sure about. I guess in the end it was a bit of everything and if you asked me what this story was about, all I could really tell you is badass lady finds her badass lady match and together they try to save their city. Then there were “gifted” pirates that gave the book a more historic fantasy feel, and then the book almost turned sci-fi-ish with its mycelium sprouting city -and the only reason I even know what mycelia is is because I’m a geek and I watch 'Star Trek Discovery'. At first I thought it was more steampunk fantasy and I was getting a similar vibe to Elizabeth Watasin’s Dark Victorian series. I don’t even know how to really classify this one. This book is wonderfully queer, super weird, and I had no idea what was going on half the time. ![]() I think this book just took the lead for the ‘WTH did I just read’ award. ![]()

Furnace by livia llewellyn6/11/2023 ![]() This Is Horror readers may be familiar with the Shirley Jackson Award nominated story ‘Furnace’, which also appeared in The Year’s Best Weird Fiction Volume 1. Livia Llewellyn is one of the best short story writers to make her mark in the last few years, with a rapidly growing body of work that is both subtle and disturbing. These are exquisite stories, of beauty and cruelty, of pleasure and pain, of hunger, and of sharp teeth sinking into tender flesh. Lush, layered, multifaceted, and elegant, the thirteen tales comprising Furnace showcase why Livia Llewellyn has been lauded by scholars and fans of weird fiction alike, and why she has been nominated multiple times for the Shirley Jackson Award and included in year’s best anthologies. And then there’s Livia Llewellyn, an author praised for her dark, stirring, evocative prose and disturbing, personal narratives. While many may strive to reach the extremes, few authors manage to find the beauty that rests in the liminal space between these polar forces, the shuddering ecstasy encased within the shock. ![]() Call them what you like: Sex and Death, Love and Destruction, Temptation and Terror. Horror fiction has long celebrated and explored the twin engines driving human existence. Look Out For… Furnace by Livia Llewellyn “Livia Llewellyn’s stories generate an almost visceral sense of unease.” ![]()
